Sure enough, when Kai came upon the river by the inn, there was a figure braced against a tree overlooking the black waters.
Aidan had never found comfort and guidance in his element the way she did with her own. Kai suspected it was because his fire was the source of his passion and desire, so he didnât feel comfortable looking to it for peace. Heâd never admitted as much.
But whenever he felt lost or defeated, he always turned to water. To her.
âI donât think I ever told you why I chose the River Isles to settle down for the long sleep.â The low timbre of his voice floated to her. He still faced the river but must have heard her footsteps. She came to a stop a few steps to his left, looking out onto the icy river and pulling her cloak tighter around her body. The water lapped in gentle rushes against the rocky bank.
âDo you remember a couple thousand years ago when the four of us went on a trip to visit the other kingdoms?â he asked. âWe traveled every inch of the three islands. Almost froze our toes off whale hunting in north Evonlea, jumped off the cliffs of Aataran, watched the sunset over the Wyndsor Sea.â She could hear a smile in his voice. âWe rode camels across the sand dunes of Ara Mir to the jewel caverns. I remember that being your favorite part. We had to get an entire crate to hold all the gemstones you bought.â
Now Kai smiled. Sheâd always had a weakness for things that sparkled.
âThose months of traveling were one of the few times we were ever truly at peace,â he continued. âAll four of us, together and content. And it was when you and I finally stopped dancing around the subject and decided to justâ¦be happy. Be together.â She peeked over and found him staring into the distance, no hint of emotion on his face.
âKarstos is a beautiful island, sure, but no more so than our Iona. There was nothing particularly special about it. But when we were on that journey, the River Isles is the spot where you first told me you loved me.â
Kaiâs heart swelled as he turned to look at her. It was hard to read his face under the midnight sky, but she didnât need to see it. Sheâd had every inch of him memorized for years, every plane of his body, every crease in his skin. âThatâs why I chose to rest there. I needed to be somewhere I could feel you, feel us, even when I was no longer awake.â
She stayed where she was, shivering at the cold breeze flowing through her hair, watching frozen sections of river water break off with a crack and begin their descent downstream. This story was nothing new; she knew he loved her. Irrevocably. The way the tide loves the shore, the way fire craves the air. Love had never been their problem.
He spoke again, and she was surprised by the pain in his words.
